Description of the role:

We are looking for employees or leaders from local businesses in Harrogate and the surrounding area to volunteer as a school governors at Springwater School in Starbeck. Springwater is a Special Educational Needs School with 70+ pupils aged between 2 and 19 years old. The school was judged Outstanding by Ofsted in 2015.

The Governing Board ensure the strategic direction of the school and support the staff team in maintaining this outstanding judgement. This requires commitment, enthusiasm and skill. You don't have to have any volunteer experience as training is provided. Some of our board have found having no experience with either schools or volunteering prior to becoming a Governor can benefit the school. It will certainly contribute to your personal development.

Many Governors find volunteering in this way a very rewarding experience. It also allows you to put your business skills to practice in a different and challenging environment.

Skills and qualities needed for the role:

We are particularly looking for Governors who have a background in law, finance, strategic management, premises and education and who are looking to give back to their local community using their valuable business skills.

The Board meets every month in term time, but we will review and adjust current arrangements to try and meet the needs of new members. Board members are expected to visit the school at least once in term time in addition to meetings and undertake individual ‘link’ Governor Roles to support the school. Practical information:

Springwater School is located within Starbeck (HG2). The site is approximately 0.3m from Starbeck train station, with regular buses departing from Harrogate bus station dropping outside school. The Board meets every month in term time and are expected to visit the school at least once in term time and undertake individual ‘link’ Governor roles to support the school. Full DBS and safeguarding training is also required, along with additional training online and face to face.

Springwater is an all age (2-19 years) school catering for students with a wide range of learning difficulties and associated Special Educational Needs.
We have a broad and exciting curriculum offering a variety of activities including rebound therapy, horse riding for the disabled, swimming and educational off-site visits.
These activities can only happen with the right level of staff support. For us to effectively offer these activities we urgently require support from committed volunteers. If you think you might be interested in a rewarding and fulfilling opportunity, we want to hear from you!
