Description of the role:

As a Housekeeping Volunteer, you will play a vital role in helping Ripon Museums to conserve and protect its collections, including the unique historic buildings of the Workhouse Museum, the Prison & Police Museum and the Courthouse Museum. This is a fantastic opportunity to use or develop practical conservation skills to help the curatorial team and gain an insight into the behind-the-scenes operations of museums.

What will I be doing?

- Carrying out conservation cleaning of the buildings and objects on display, using conservation materials and equipment
- Volunteering as part of a team of two or three people
- Liaising with the Curator and curatorial team and reporting back on any issues
- Being aware of the often-fragile nature of historic buildings and collections
- Being aware of emergency procedures as required

Skills and qualities needed for the role:

What qualities, skills and experience do I need?

- Interest in museums and collections
- Ability to handle objects with care and sensitivity
- Ability to work as part of a small team and on own initiative when required
- Physically able to move around the buildings and clean hard-to-reach areas

How much time will I be expected to give?

About 2-3 hours per week; days are flexible

Where will I be based?

Housekeeping will take place at all three museums – the Workhouse Museum, Prison & Police Museum and Courthouse Museum.

Following an application process with the Volunteer Manager, new volunteers join the team and become registered volunteers with Ripon Museum Trust.

Organisation Information

Preservation of historic buildings and artefacts, education services and responsible for The Prison & Police, The Workhouse and The Courthouse Museums in Ripon. We have around 140 volunteers who fulfil a variety of roles which range from helping with education visits to gardening, cataloguing the collections to keeping our accounts, repairing brickwork to researching the stories behind the buildings.
