Description of the role:

With kindness and compassion the volunteer will support individuals dealing with communication problems caused by Aphasia to regain or improve their speech, communication skills and confidence.
They will provide 1-to-1 coaching to patients in using specialist Speech and Language therapy software programmes. Volunteers will visit clients at their home in order to provide assistance on using the programmes.

Skills and qualities needed for the role:

IT literate. Friendly, positive and patient. A self starter who is able to work independently. No qualifications required.

Practical information:

We request a minimum of 12 months commitment and a commitment to help a minimum of two clients (preferably more) within your geographical location. The amount of time required to support one client is generally 1 hour plus travel time per month. Visits take place at the client's home address. The volunteering opportunity is flexible and is based around your availability. We would prefer that the volunteer has access to their own transport. Full training is provided including an induction, focused training on the Speech and language therapy software programmes (Step by Step and React2), visit practice and shadowing of other volunteers and/or charity manager. A volunteer handbook is provided and all travel and out of pocket expenses will be reimbursed.

If someone you care for is recovering from a stroke or brain injury, or living with long term communication difficulties, then you will probably be looking for all the support and resources you can get. Speak With IT can help. Interactive speech and language therapy tool for adults with a communication impairment due to aphasia after stroke or brain injuries or cognitive communication disorder after brain injury.
As a charity we offer support from trained volunteers to help anyone with aphasia to use computer software programmes that are available to assist speech recovery. At the moment we only provide for the Step-by-Step programme and React2 programme, but we intend to be support other programmes in the near future. We will offer to support your use of the programme for as long and as often as is suitable for your needs. All we ask is that the programme is used on a regular basis – at least 3 or 4 times a week for 20 to 30 minutes at a time where possible.
