Saint Michael's Hospice
Description of the role:

Reception volunteers are needed for the Hospice's Bereavement Support Service building.

Volunteers are part of the administration team - meeting and greeting visitors, answering telephone calls when required and helping to answer general queries or transferring calls around the building as appropriate.

It is crucial that receptionists present a friendly yet professional attitude to all visitors or telephone callers.

Receptionists are the first point of call for visitors and telephone callers to Burton House (where Saint Michael's bereavement service - JustB is housed).

Key tasks include:
- Managing the door, buzzing in clients, meet and greet clients, children, Young People and adults, manage signing in/out book.
- Accessing the computer and basic Just B systems such as the online room booking system and workers online calendar system.
- On rare occasions to make room bookings on the systems.
- Managing the telephone system, taking calls, messages for staff: in the message book for individual workers or email if to whole team.

Skills and qualities needed for the role:

Volunteers will need to:
- Have a good telephone manner, be smart and pleasant
- Show empathy and patience, and have excellent listening skills
- Reliable
- Have good computer skills

Previous experience in reception or related administrative role is useful.

Practical information:

Volunteers cover either 9am - 1pm or 1pm - 5pm and usually have a regular day on which they attend.

Volunteers are needed Monday morning & afternoon and on Friday afternoons (no evening slots currently available). Some volunteers may prefer to support on a bank basis, covering planned absence and unplanned sickness.

Services offered from the Hospice include: lymphoedema support, day therapy, inpatient care, support for families and carers, bereavement support. Patient services are delivered by a team of specialists, including consultants, dieticians, doctors, nurses, social workers, complementary therapists, chaplains, physiotherapist, psychologists, occupational therapists, social workers and support workers. This team works in partnership with other health and social care professionals involved with patients to ensure all care is personalised to meet a persons particular needs.
