Hospice Patient Support Volunteer
Saint Michael's Hospice
Description of the role:

The IPU Volunteer assists the clinical team on IPU in providing a high standard of support to patients, families, visitors and staff.

The role covers a mix of administration, reception and practical tasks which will vary according to the needs of the unit on any particular day.

The frequency of tasks varies: some are regular duties, others occur on a specific day or only occasionally. You may be asked to take on responsibility for a specific task if you are a regular volunteer.

This role also varies substantially depending on the number of patients on the Unit and their dependency needs.

At all times volunteers are representing Saint Michael's through the way they support patients and relatives. They are an important part of the service the hospice provides.

At the beginning of each shift the ward volunteer should report to one of the nurses to receive appropriate information. This should include the names of the patients, their dietary requirements, any visiting restrictions and any other relevant information.

The IPU volunteer should also check the communication book for any messages left by colleagues.

It is important that if a volunteer has any doubts about any aspect of the role that they ask the nurse in charge for advice and direction.

Key tasks answering external telephone calls to the unit. Transfer them to the appropriate member of staff, department or bedroom (only if it is indicated in the handover that patients are taking calls.) If it is not possible to transfer the call, take a message and pass it on straight away to the relevant person. Receive calls from reception querying whether a patient is able to receive visitors. Then ascertain if a visit is convenient or, if in doubt, check with the nurse in charge.

Skills and qualities needed for the role:

Volunteers must be:
- Comfortable volunteering with patients
- Be reliable and committed
- Be willing to undertake a variety of different tasks
