SASH Volunteer Hosts
Safe and Sound Homes (SASH)
Description of the role:

SASH prevents young people from becoming homeless by offering them a room in the home of a volunteer. We are looking for volunteer 'hosts' who can offer a spare room to young people facing homelessness. The young people we support are referred to us by other agencies such as North Yorkshire County Council. Main reasons for homelessness are family breakdown or having run out of places to sleep after a period of 'sofa surfing'. The aim is to ensure their problems are resolved promptly so that a time of crisis does not become a vicious circle of homelessness and unemployment.

We are looking for people who can offer a spare room to a young person facing homelessness. We need hosts for both our Nightstop and Supported Lodgings projects.

Our NIGHTSTOP Project provides an evening meal, the chance of a bath or shower, a bed in their spare room and breakfast the next day to a young person facing homelessness up to 14 nights (but not necessarily with the same host - this depends on host availability), to keep them safe while more permanent accommodation is found.

Our SUPPORTED LODGINGS Project Hosts provide a room and support for a young person for up to 2 years. Together with the SASH Support worker, they play an active role in helping the young person develop the skills they need for independent living, for example with cooking or budgeting. Each young person is different so the support is tailored to individual needs.

Skills and qualities needed for the role:

You will need a spare room that you can offer to the young person requiring accommodation. If you do not live within easy access to public transport, you should be able to offer a lift to the young person to and from an agreed meeting point. our works come from all walks of life and there are no special skills required. All that is needed is an ability to empathise with young people who are experiencing difficult times, and a willingness to volunteer with SASH and adhere to the SASH policies. Please note: volunteers must be at least 26 years old.

Practical information:

Hosting takes place in the volunteer's home.

Each young person is fully risk-assessed and police-checked before being offered a Nightstop or Supported Lodgings place. We also provide full training and support, regular host forums, training opportunities and an out-of-hours emergency telephone contact.
