Telephone Befriender

Telephone Befriender
Vision Support Harrogate District
Description of the role:

You will make regular contact with a visually impaired person to talk to them about how they are feeling and what is going on in their life. You will be a good listener, have an interest in other people and be able to demonstrate empathy to someone who is visually impaired. As well as knowing when to listen, you will be happy to share details of your own life and enter into a genuine two way conversation. We hope that a real friendship will develop between the telephone befriender and the visually impaired person, which will be sustained for some time.

You will be helping to alleviate loneliness and isolation and to pick up on any deterioration in the person you are befriending, signposting them to other agencies or to our own visiting service to offer further help.

Skills and qualities needed for the role:

You will have excellent listening skills, be able to demonstrate a warm and caring attitude and to empathise with people with a visual impairment or other disability and who can be desperately lonely and low. You will be able to accept people as they are and not direct them, whilst offering support and signposting to other agencies for further help. The role will require a DBS Check. We are over the time expectation, but would prefer 3 hours every other week, or more if the volunteer wanted. This opportunity is open to volunteers on a long term commitment and we would encourage people over the age of 18 to apply. We would also welcome application from the visually impaired and would adjust the nature of the volunteering depending on the nature of their impairment. Our Centre is also accessible for wheelchair users.

Practical information:

We will provide visually impaired awareness training, to assist you in volunteering with visually impaired people. We will also cover volunteer expenses for travelling to and from the Centre and provide parking. We are looking for 3 hours, every other week, either in the morning (10:00 to 13:00) or afternoon (13:00 to 16:00) on a Monday (afternoon), Tuesday (afternoon), Wednesday (morning, afternoon) Thursday (morning).
