Description of the role:

Do you like getting out and about? Could you help others to get out too? Our voluntary car driver service provides a lifeline to people unable to use public transport due to mobility, disability or location.

We help people in Harrogate, Knaresborough and the surrounding villages to get to:
- Medical and dental appointments
- Day centres and social visits
- Essential trips such as shopping, going to the bank, post office etc.

We require enthusiastic volunteer drivers to take people out in the Harrogate District. This is a great opportunity for anyone enjoys social contact and wants to offer practical help but cannot always commit to regular volunteering times.

Skills and qualities needed for the role:

We are looking for a volunteer who is fit and active and likes getting out and about. Our ideal volunteer will be caring and courteous and be able to carry out their role with an unbiased attitude. They will also be sensitive to the mobility needs of clients, especially older people. The role will involve: - Transporting clients safely to and from their chosen destination - Offer basic assistance to the client to safely enter and leave the vehicle and to access and leave their outgoing and return destinations - Safely stow any walking aids, wheelchairs etc. where required - Ensure their car is correctly taxed, insured, roadworthy and has valid MOT at all times. - Ensure the Service Coordinator is advised immediately of any changes to the drivers' health or other circumstances which affect their driving licence, insurance or ability to drive. - Collect mileage allowance and booking fee at the set rate and submit receipts if requested. - Keep accurate records of journeys made and submit these monthly to the Scheduler. - Notify of any incidents or accidents affecting passenger safety whilst on duty, including any concerns about the welfare or safety of the client.

Practical information:

- Drivers need to be over 18 and to hold a full UK driving licence with no more than three penalty points.
- Drivers will also need to have access to a vehicle.
- All volunteers are issued with a Volunteer Handbook and any training needs would be identified at induction. Volunteers would be required to attend training/volunteer meetings from time to time.
- Mileage will be reimbursed at an agreed rate.
- There is no minimum time requirement for this volunteering opportunity. Most of the journey requests are for weekday daytimes. - - The role does NOT involve personal care, nursing tasks, administering medication, attending to personal finances, lifting, house volunteer or shopping for the service user.

We help people in the community who are older, vulnerable and/or living with long-term ill health or disabilities to stay safe and well supported at home by providing a number of services aimed at promoting independence and tackling loneliness. With the support of over 100 dedicated volunteers our services include:

Volunteer befriending and social groups
Here to HELP - a chance for a cuppa and a chat and to find out where to turn for community support and activities
Voluntary car driving services to enable those who can’t access public transport due to rural location and/or limited mobility to attend medical appointments, make social visits, attend day centres and make essential trips such as shopping or banking.
Help at Home - gardening, decorating and odd job service for people unable to do the work themselves or could not afford a professional tradesperson

Who we help
We support anyone with conditions related to health or old age which prevents them from doing things they want/need to. It is particularly important to us to be able to help people living without a network of family and friends, or with full-time caring responsibilities, or those who cannot afford to pay for such services.
